Dear Stephen,
I was diagnosed with lyme on May 5 and started doxycycline mid-June. I am trying to figure out what to do for my two children, age 4.5 years and age 1 year. Someone recommended I check with you, as you may have some insight. I know the controversy is treat or don’t treat, but I worry about waiting and them getting very sick very quickly. I’ve heard samento and cumanda may be options for them. Is this something I would need a doctor to prescribe or can it be obtained over the counter? Thank you in advance for your guidance. I am terrified for my kids and am unsure of what to do for them. I don’t want to make them sicker and I don’t want them to fight this disease all of their lives. Thank you!

Stephen’s response:
I would give them astragalus as a preventative. It is a very safe herb, used as a food (in making soups and rice) in China for thousands of years. You can just add 10 drops of the tincture to the diet of the one year old 3x daily. The other child can be given larger doses, say 1/8 tsp in food daily. If they do get sick the best thing to use is Japanese knotweed. Use the tincture, same doses.

Why do you recommend the tincures in place of the capsules for children’s prevention? My kids are 7 and 11 and I am looking for a preventative and amounts given as well. Both swallow vitamins easily.
Hi Phaedra,
I think he recommends tinctures for children because they are easier to give to kids. Many children do not like to take (or are unable to swallow) capsules. You can search in our archives to see if he’s answered this question before.
Is Astralgus and knot wood the same?
No, they are two different plants.
Where is the best place to get astragulus? My husband was infected with Lyme this weekend after we went on a family hiking trip. I’m trying to figure out what to do with my daughter (2.5 years old) and myself. We have had no sign of tickbite (he had a tick embedded in him and then a bullseye later that night) but want to take all precautions.
Please tell me where to get the Astragulus and what the dosage would be for a 15 year old, 140 lb boy. Thanks.
Dear Dr Buhner,
Would you also recommend astragalus for prevention of Bartonella? I have Bartonella myself and have a 4.5 year old son. We live in an area with many many ticks. I see that astragalus is contra-indicated in case of autoimmune disease. My son had Kawasaki disease last year. Would Astragalus be contra-indicated in him and if so what would you recommend for him prevention wise? We are doing already everything to prevent ticks from biting! Thank you so much!
Did Mr. Buhner or anyone else ever reply to this? I have Hashimoto’s and wondering about astragalus.
Thanks,
Darlene
My 4 year old, 30 pounds, was bitten by a tick and we found it after 3 days or so. Which astragalas tincture do we purchase and how do I find out dosage?
How long should the astragalus be taken as a preventative? Just the 30 days?
Stephen has said that taking astragalus “will keep the immune markers high that need to be high to prevent infection” so I would think you need to take it as long as you need support for prevention.
